The Awkward Phase

The Awkward Phase: the time in your life when you were quite unfortunate (or just plain goofy) looking. The time when people look back on pictures of someone and say, "What the heck was going on with _________ here?" (If you have yet to experience this phase, just wait, it's coming for ya!) For most people, this phase comes around the middle school years. For me, it came when I was 4.

Now, maybe you don't find me to be awkward looking in this picture, and maybe you even find it cute, but be patient. It gets worse.

When I was about 2 1/2 years old (prior to the pic above), I began to pull my hair out in my sleep. The Doc said it was probably due to some type of stress or anxiety. Looking back on it now, I wonder how "stress" could cause a kid to pull his/her hair out (right?!?), but whatever. We'll keep that reasoning.

Soon after this time, my right eye began to wander toward my nose, so the nice pair of eyeglasses with "Coke bottle" lenses ensued. Talk about magnification! Lovely.

In an effort to salvage as much of the "long" hair as possible left over after my hair pulling, my mom wouldn't get my hair cut to even it all out. (She always wanted a little girl with "long, beautiful hair.") This, as you can see, left me with a fabulous mullet. PARTY IN THE BACK!

Not only are these two factors (the glasses and the hair) Class A Awkward Phase Inducers individually, but put them together, and you get my hot mess of a pre-K-aged self. I guess I should be glad I never had to deal with braces, which have been known to amplify awkward phases. Now, I'm not trying to be mean to myself or to anyone else, but it's good to laugh at yourself sometimes! I think doing so has helped me handle criticism better, because if I understand how much of a mess I was as a kid (or in any other aspect in my life), then someone else saying, "Hey! Nice mullet!" just makes me laugh! And even if you have some bumps in the road, such as this one below, it's all still good!

Oh, and in case you were wondering, I managed to come out of my awkward phase by the time I was 7. I hope...
